Coarse fishing clubs in Avon - Bathampton Angling Association

Bathampton Angling Association was founded in 1936 and offers top class fishing available on seven Lakes, the River Avon and the Kennet and Avon Canal as well as trout fishing on Box Brook and the River Chew.
Details of their coarse fishing venues are:

Hunstrete Lakes: The two “newest” lakes – Withy and Bridge Pools – were established with the help of a substantial Lottery Grant and both have a natural appearance and have a reputation for some of the best fishing in the area.
- Hunstrete Lake has always been recognised for it’s high quality sport with the emphasis on carp and tench. Many anglers have achieved their personal best carp here with loads of double figure commons and mirrors as well as a good number of “twenties”. The lake is also a favourite with tench anglers with large numbers of 4 to 6lb fish and some 7 to 9 pounders with bream to over 8lbs, roach to 1¾lbs also feature and pike to 22lbs.
- Bridge Pool is 2½ acres in size with loads of features, including three islands. Good sport can be had literally from any swim as it is heavily stocked. All fishing is from 34 comfortable wooden platforms which are well spaced to give plenty of room for everyone. Carp to 20lbs. – Tench to 6lbs. – Bream to 7lbs. – Roach to 2½lbs – Perch to 2½ lbs - Chub to 3lbs.
- Withy Pool is approx. 3 acres with 2 islands and plenty of open water. The carp have piled on the weight since it opened and there are plenty of big doubles as well as the occasional ‘twenty’. There are 40 wooden platforms spaced out for easy fishing. Carp to 22lbs. – Tench to 5½lbs. – Bream to 6lbs. – Roach to 2½lbs – Perch to 2lbs – Chub to 3lbs.

Newton Park: The mecca for BIG catches. Mirrors and commons; plenty of doubles and some twenties. Biggest mirror 28lbs; biggest common 21½lbs. Also holds roach to over 2lbs and a few VERY BIG chub [over 6lbs].

Kennet & Avon Canal: Bathampton A. A. have the fishing rights from it’s starting point in Bath right through to Winsley Hill at Limpley Stoke, which is a continuous stretch of approximately 6½ miles. Most common species are roach, bream, tench, perch and gudgeon; with roach to 2lbs, bream to 5lbs, tench to 3lbs and perch to 2½ lbs. There are also some very big chub in the Claverton area, and quality carp to 20lbs plus. There’s also a good head of pike but they’re mainly on the small side.

River Avon: Many newcomers to angling don’t realise what they’re missing when they spend all their time at stillwaters and ignore the Bristol Avon. Bathampton A. A.’s river fisheries are full of fish of all types and sizes, and there is little more enjoyable than “trotting” a stick float through your swim, watch it disappear under the surface, strike and feel the satisfying thump of a good fish. Pike, chub, roach, bream, perch and barbel.

River Chew: Fishing is on right hand bank upstream from Compton Dando road bridge for two fields; approximately one mile. Main species : Brown trout, grayling, roach, dace, chub, gudgeon.

Lydes Farm: Two lakes - WIDEWATER and DRAGONFLY POND - are available to members, each providing very different fishing and both having their own particular attractions. Widewater - mirror and common carp to 15lbs, tench to 6½lbs, bream to 7½lbs, roach to 2lbs and perch to 3¼lbs have been landed. Drangonfly Pond - tench and TRUE crucian carp and there is a good head of roach and rudd with plenty weighing to 1 lb. plus. Small head of carp as well.

Weston Pond: A Small but very productive pond becoming more and more popular due to it’s quality sport and the close proximity for Bath members. There are bream, roach, rudd, tench and carp in good numbers and with a stream continually running through providing plenty of natural food, the fish thrive and are in great condition.
