Bakers Mill Farm:
Within Dorset's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Bakers Mill Farm nestles in the lush green and peaceful river Axe valley surrounded by the rolling hills and picturesque villages of West Dorset. With Broadleaze Fishery, a new coarse and carp fishing lake, opened at Easter 2010, this is the perfect destination for a fishing holiday or a peaceful getaway in beautiful Dorset.
The working farm dates from the early 1600's and is a haven for wildlife. You may see rabbits, foxes, badgers, and deer. The deer are not shy and you can often see them grazing near the cottages. Heron, geese, ducks and buzzards can be seen and there are many species of smaller birds on the farm, ideal for those of you interested in bird watching. During the summer swallows and house martins will be flying all around the cottages. Water voles and otters have recently inhabited the farm.
The holiday cottages comprise a Grade II listed stone barn and traditional farm buildings which have been tastefully restored to create five terrace cottages, each with one double bedroom sleeping two/three plus cot, and a barn conversion with three double bedrooms, sleeping six plus cot. There is also a games room with internet access, laundry room, BBQ and picnic tables for al-fresco dining. They surround a sunny courtyard, featuring a rill and small wildlife pond. There are enclosed gardens and patio areas. Coarse fishing is available on our own lakes for our visitors as well as day ticket anglers.
We are perfectly situated to tour the countryside of Thomas Hardy and River Cottage. Historic market towns, the Jurassic Heritage Coast of West Dorset, stately homes and gardens, and parts of Somerset, are all within easy reach of this idyllic setting.
You can play golf, fish, clay pigeon shoot or see the area on cycle, horse back, or even llama trek from the village. There are walks from the farm, and a couple of long distance footpaths are close-by.
The village amenities of shop and post office are within a 20 minute walk of the farm down a little used country lane.
What our clients think:
"Lovely cottage, very comfortable, well equipped. Good area for exploring - could have done with a longer stay. Good pubs in the area for eating out. Look forward to returning."
"Clean, well equipped cottage. Great walks and fishing - will be back."
Cottage was immaculate and had every plate, pot, utensil and gadget you would need. A lot of thought has gone into providing for the holiday maker and the games room and laundry facilities were a real bonus. Lovely comfy bed, great shower and kitchen thrown in."
The Fishing Lakes:
The recently stocked coarse fishery has been set up for the use of guests staying in the holiday cottages as well as day ticket anglers. Broadleaze Fishery consists of 2 established spring fed lakes with a total area of 1.5 acres and varying depths to 10 feet.
The lakes, although not large, are well stocked with carp to double figures, bream to 9lb, tench and roach, all of which are in excellent condition, providing the more experienced angler with an enjoyable trip, while still being fun for the family and providing good sport for all.
Located just 5 minutes drive from the cottages with a panoramic view down the Axe valley, the rural setting provides the perfect place to relax, fish, and observe the interesting wildlife; foxes, deer, and towards evening, badgers can be spotted along with quite a few species of waterfowl. You will note the lakes have been fenced to keep otters out so it is possible you may spot one of these elusive creatures too.
